Cacay Oil (Caryodendron orinocense)

I have been asked by my customers to carry this oil for years, since it was virtually unknown. I quickly found out that it wasn't produced in Brasil but in northern countries like Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela, that alone makes my job harder as I always want to make sure my oils are pure, high quality and ethically sourced. When I finally found the oil, the producer's Minimum Order Quantity was enough to buy a brand new car. Now, years later, after I stopped looking since most Cacay had become monocultures due to its newfound fame, I was offered Cacay by someone I trust 100% and I bought it, it is from a small, ethical producer who still works with wild harvested Cacay. Nowadays you can find Cacay quite easily on Amazon and even eBay with great prices, I have no idea about their quality or purity... But I know my Cacay will be the real deal and I am SUPER excited about it.

ECOLOGY

Caryodendron orinocense, commonly known as cacay, is an evergreen tree belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae.

The Cacay tree is indigenous to the north-west of South America, it distinguishes itself by its dense and leafy top, as well as its production of fruits, each one containing three edible nuts. Cacay is notable for the oil extracted from its nuts, which is edible and is also used in cosmetics.

Caryodendron orinocense is a  tree which can grow to 30–40 metres (100–130 ft) tall in the forest. Its trunk is straight and cylindrical before separating into numerous branches. Its outer bark is smooth, and is periodically shed as laminar plates. It possesses a wide and superficial root system, such that its thick roots are sometimes visible above ground. The longevity of the species exceeds 60 years.
